"Gay Marriage Is a Threat to Humanity," Spouts His Excellency Pope Benedict XVI. So THAT's Why He Won't Let All His Priests Get Married?!?

...but at least Popey can count among his political friends and allies a fellow anointed royal figure in the form of His Majesty Barack Obama -- who likewise finds time in his life to actually worry about and oppose gay marriage.

Me, I'll pass. Wanna talk about something that threatens humanity, Popey? How about the stifling, unsustainable debt in Greece, your beloved current home of Italy, most of the European Union, and in the United States? That dire crisis -- ignored by politicians of both extremist stripes on a daily basis everywhere -- threatens to tank the global economy sometime this year and make the crash of 2008 look like a Rick Perry Sunday morning sashay through a Texas shithouse.

Or you can spend your nights losing sleep over a couple of people of the same sex who love each other having the same marriage status as everyone else. Whatever floats your boat, there, Popey. Ronald Reagan used to say that he never left his party, rather it left him. Well I've never belonged to a party. But I did used to be a catholic.

  1. Postscript: My Kraut-Mick ancestors mostly roll over in their graves tonight over this post. But as the banished hankster might say, guess I went and broke their family tradition (although in a whole hell of a lot more ways than just religious views -- and I'm not even gay (not that there's anything wrong with that)).

The Pope, as any of us, can hold positions on many, many issues at the same time. Just because he is taking a position regarding "gay unions" does not limit his ability to consider positions on other matters as well. And given his position as the head of a religion, I put forth that his priorities lie MORE in the area of discerning what is moral and immoral regarding the family and souls and LESS in the area of finance, anyway. The fiscal stability of Greece or Italy, etc. are extremely important matters. Your article correctly points out that those who ARE directly responsible for those matters have fallen down on the job. THEY need to get up and fix what is broken; and I'm sure that the Pontiff would approve! : )

  3. That's a good comment, David. I just think chalking up gay marriage as an issue deserving of "threat to humanity" status is just a tad (and probably a whole lot more) over the top. That the pope cannot be expected to comment on fiscal economic matters is a point well taken.

That's what I like about you, IR - you're not a blathering idiot! : ) We need more people like you who actually THINK before they form an opinion or take a position - even if that position might not be exactly like mine.
For example, even though we both agree on the fiscal issue mentioned, I lean more toward the considered position taken by Benedict regarding the family and the discombobulation of (our) society. I believe that the 'regularization of homosexual behavior' into their societies was a big part of the decline and fall of both the otherwise fantastic Greek society and then later, the giant and powerful Roman Empire. : )

  5. I think the gay people that get married just want to have a life comparable to that of straight couples...not sure how the Pope thinks that's a threat to humanity? I mean, isn't the world already over-populated as it is? I don't think humanity is going to go away anytime soon, seems like we've got a lot bigger things to worry about than gay marriage - just my opinion =)

  6. HAH: I completely agree.

David: Thanks for the kind words. Gay marriage really couldn't be an issue farther down the priority scale for me. I honestly don't care that much. It's for the states to decide, and so they will. That's why I laughed at stephanopoulus (sp) asking about it (and contraception) in a PRESIDENTIAL debate.

At a minimum, I think civil unions are in order, but I really have no opposition to gay marriage either. I believe my viewpoint here is probably in the minority of Americans, and I respect the opposing viewpoint on this particular issue even if I don't agree.

And I can at times be a blathering idiot, I'm sure. I do try not to spew opinions that are completely indefensible or have no basis whatsoever in fact, but the caveat is always if I get angry about a story: Then you never know what I might say, since anger has no mind.
