Speechless.

  1. Postscript: I didn't hear anything about the Joplin tornado until Monday morning. Needless to say, if I'd known about this Sunday night, I wouldn't have been making jokes about Obama's Irish roots.

  2. I wondered if you knew....it's so sad. I think they were still having some severe weather this morning with hail.

  3. On weekends, I pay a lot less attention to news websites because there's never anything going on. I RARELY watch any local TV news. Last night, I was online, but about the only news site I might have checked once or twice was Drudge, and all I recall seeing was a single link down on his board about a hospital somewhere being hit by a tornado. So I totally missed this until this morning.

This story hits home so much more than tornadoes in the south or in the east since I grew up a little north of there and have probably been to or passed through Joplin literally hundreds of times in the past. When I see the pictures, those folks feel like my people. BTW, my Obama Irish post was posted Sunday night after 11 (I had intended it as my Monday post).

  4. Also just saw this tonight, because I recall your familiarity with Riverside, MO: The KC area has sent a bunch of emergency workers, firefighters and cops to Joplin to help out, including a number of people from Riverside. Well, I just saw the below-linked story about one of the Riverside cops in Joplin getting struck by lightning in the thunderstorms down there today. That guy should get the highest medal of valor that his department can award, in my opinion.

And it gets back to a point that you raised: Joplin today, in the aftermath of Sunday, got pounded with severe thunderstorms all day long, adding complete insult to injury. And it's not over yet. There is supposed to be another wave of very severe weather (quite possibly tornadic) tomorrow night all the way from down south in Joplin to up here in KC and further north.

  5. The crew from Nightline reported from Joplin last night and the scenes they showed and the people they talked to just made me cry - it makes my heart hurt to think of the devastation. They reported that this is the deadliest US tornado since 1953.

  6. Correct. The most deadly single tornado in 60 years. 2 or 3 hundred were killed in the south earlier this year by tornadoes, but that was a whole combination of various tornadoes.

  7. I've since heard that this is now in the top 8 most deadliest tornadoes on record. It will likely get worse too, there are still @ 1500 people unaccounted for. Listen to me, Little Miss Sunshine.....sorry!

  8. I've seen that 1500 figure. If that's still accurate, I would think the death toll would become MUCH higher. That's a question that as a journalist I would be asking officials, but I haven't heard anyone ask it: Given that apparently 1500 people are still missing, how high do they expect the death toll to ultimately reach. Yes, it's a morbid question and topic, but I'm surprised I haven't heard it being asked (it probably has been, and I've just missed it).

  9. I had to stop watching for a bit - it was too distressing.....I'm just going to focus on ways to help - mainly donating money. They can't handle any more "stuff" being sent I heard on tv, they don't have anyplace to store all of it. Still, it's awesome to see how people are being so generous with time and money.

  10. The missing count is now down to around 230. And they say many of those 230 will be people already included in the death count but not yet identified. So I'm hopeful the death count is not going to rise too much higher than it's already at.

  11. I heard that too! 230's not great, but it's a damn sight better than 1500. Did you see that the baptist church weirdos are going to picket in Joplin soon? I'm sure you did, but I found the link for you just in case:

  12. That they would protest these funerals is very predictable. I suggest they stay on the public sidewalk. Once they get on private property, their First Amendment rights begin to become toast.
