Hollywood apparently thinks so; either that, or it's just fresh out of original ideas. In addition to the current '80s-themed "Hot Tub Time Machine," check out this list of upcoming motion picture releases (link below):-Clash of the Titans (4/2 release) (I guess this makes some sense given the new 3-D genre).
-The Karate Kid (6/11 release) (I would leave the original alone).
-The A-Team (6/11 release) (a personal favorite of mine).
-Red Dawn (11/24 release) (This time the Chinese invade. The original's OK for nostalgia, but that's about it. Why would you remake this?).
-The Thing (2011 release) (the '80s version was itself a remake, so why not?).
-21 Jumpstreet (no release date yet) (I hadn't even heard this title since the '80s themselves -- Why remake?).
-Poltergeist (no release date yet) (Will this movie be "cursed" like the original was?).
-Ghostbusters III (no release date yet) (Enough already!).
-The Smurfs (no release date yet) (Good Grief! NO!).
Looking at this list, I think the only one which I have any real interest in seeing is The A-Team. That's partly because I want to see if the A-Team actually kills their first bad guy this time around.

Postscript: Below is an off-the-top-of-my-head list of some of my personal favorite BAD '80s movies which I like in a cult classic sort of way. If Hollywood remakes any of these, then you will know that it's heavily left-leaning persuasion has finally and officially turned every brain out there into oatmeal:
ReplyDelete-Gymkata (this one's THE WORST, which is what makes its so enjoyable to watch).
-Hawk The Slayer (Jack Palance & a dude with fake elf ears who can shoot arrows real fast).
-Beastmaster (my favorite part of this one: John Amos kickin' some ass!).
-Porky's (this one actually has some redeeming values apart from all the crudeness -- but it's the crudeness that makes it worth watching).
-First Blood ("He eats things that would make a billy goat puke!").
-Ruckus (a low budget First Blood ripoff starring Dirk Benedict from The A-Team and the original Battlestar Galatica).
-Red Dawn (oh wait, they ARE remaking this one!).
-Rocky IV (Kill the damn Russian!).
-Bad Influence (OK, it's actually from 1990, but how about that evil Rob Lowe character?).
-Spies Like Us (I just like the Paul McCartney theme song).
-Bloodsport (how about the one cage fighter who hops around like a chimpanzee? He didn't last too long).
-Kickboxer (Best scene: Jean-Claude Van Damme is in a bar drunk, but that strangely has little impact on his martial arts skills).
I could go on and on. Maybe I'll add a few more later.
Two more BAD favorites from the '80s (I knew I would think of more):
ReplyDelete-Prince of Darkness (John Carpenter movie about a vat of goo in a church basement that turns into the Anti-Christ -- Also, an Alice Cooper cameo as a murderous hobo).
-Witchboard (A Ouija Board possesses Tawny Kitain back when she was hot! -- And a rare film appearance by that Patch guy from the soap operas).
I agree I love a lot of the movies and TV shows you mentioned in your post from the 80's. While some have been remade wonderfully, others they should never have touched. Take V for example the 80's version was a portrail of fascism meets America, yes it was cheesy but it was awsome I still love watching it. The remake.......it just feels watered down and well it sucks in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think the remakes of the A-Team and Red Dawn should be really good. I got to see some of the filming of the A-Team here in Vancouver and it looks really good.
By the way very cool blog let me know if your interested in exchanging links
